I entrusted Leslie O’Brien with my Boerboel, Bindi, expecting professionalism, safety, and thoughtful guidance—especially given the breed’s size and sensitivity. Unfortunately, my experience raised several concerns. During a session, Leslie raised her voice at Bindi in a way that felt reactive and emotional. For a powerful, sensitive breed, this type of energy can increase tension rather than resolve it. An unfamiliar, very junior apprentice was allowed to approach Bindi without prior notice. This increased stress for my dog and created an avoidable safety concern. On one occasion, I observed Bindi being physically corrected on the muzzle after giving a warning signal. I found this uncomfortable and not aligned with the approach I expected from a professional trainer. In another session, I was asked to throw wet chicken into dirt for Bindi to retrieve, despite raising concerns about potential health risks such as parasites or ingestion of sand. I also became concerned when Leslie mentioned that she avoids taking her own dog out due to reactivity, which made me question the suitability of the training methods for my dog. Overall, I paid R400 for this lesson but left feeling anxious rather than supported. I expected my dog to be treated with respect and safety in mind, and I did not feel this was consistently achieved. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend O’Brien’s Dog School. Consumers have a right to honest feedback regarding dog care and training, and I hope my review helps others make informed decisions.

Durban Dog School has been an incredible experience! Leslie is an outstanding trainer calm, knowledgeable, and truly understands how to work with all dogs, especially power breeds. Her approach is kind and always respectful, which makes a huge difference. She takes the time to understand each dog and their needs, and her guidance has helped me build a strong, balanced routine with my dog. I’ve seen amazing progress and feel much more confident as a dog owner. Highly recommended!

My Yorkshire Terrier and I attended a 2 hour scent workshop with Leslie this past Saturday afternoon. I found the workshop incredibly interesting and I was amazed by the nose of my dog. The practical training was amazing and seeing my little Herci use his brain and nose to figure out what we were trying to learn was so exciting. Herci is a highly trained obedience dog, so this was something completely new and we both had to focus and work really hard to come to grips with this different and fun new experience. Leslie provided everything we needed to do the workshop and her knowledge, patience and understanding of the scent work was so encouraging and motivating. Leslie is a force free trainer and very aware and vigilant around the handler and dog to ensure that we are feeling comfortable and safe in the training space. Thank you so much Leslie for a really fun and informative afternoon, we loved the time together learning and building our connection and trust. I was relaxed and really challenged which I loved, as Herci and I need something new. We can't wait for the next workshop and perhaps scent training on a regular basis. Pawfectly Pawsome Experience

We did both the Puppy Class and the Calm & Confident class, and they were a fantastic foundation for our power breed. Leslie is incredibly knowledgeable—especially when it comes to power breeds—and her guidance has made a huge difference in our dog’s behavior and confidence. Highly recommend!

I’m incredibly thankful to Durban Dog School for the care and dedication they’ve shown to my two pitbulls. Leslie and her team provided training that was not only effective but also grounded in kindness and respect. Her gentle, thoughtful approach works wonders with all breeds—whether large or small. Having power breeds like pitbulls comes with responsibility, and consistency is key. Even outside of training sessions, following Leslie’s guidance has made a huge difference in helping both me and my dogs build a structured, balanced routine. Leslie is an amazing soul who takes the time to understand you and your precious pup. Her training methods provide a structure that enables a trust relationship between you and your pet. I would definitely recommend her, our babies Kovu and Nala love her to bits!

Took both my boys to Durban Dog School for the puppy course and adolescent course. Leslie has been the best, she is understanding and supportive, the classes have helped my boys tremendously. Apart from this, she has also created a community that provides so much of insight and support.
