Lovely setting, reasonable restaurant (coffee and fresh scones were great) with good service. It’s worth the visit for tea garden and wandering through the Oubaas trail up to Smuts Koppie, although we were disappointed to have only seen a few birds. (Probably too many non-indigenous trees (Pines and Eucalypts) around the koppie). A small display of second world ware artillery - guns and tanks - afford some interest for those inclined, and of course the Smuts house itself is a museum for those interested in the history an lifestyle of the time (we did not enter).
Very much an old school museum, where a lot of things are well preserved. It nonetheless seems as if it could do with a bit of TLC and don’t expect too much active or interactive displays. The most remarkable thing is to see what modest life Jan Smuts must have led, despite the impact he’s had on world history. Serious Jan Smuts fans are sure to spend many hours there. The museum is well recommended for anyone that has even just a little interest in South African history.
Definitely recommend walking through the Jan Smuts House. There is a lot to see and it is very informative. Well taken care of. Not allowed to take photos inside the house.
Great afternoon outing with the kids, lawn tables could do with some maintenance
