Rietvlei Zoo Farm

Rietvlei Zoo Farm is one of those rare places in Johannesburg where you can enjoy nature, animals, wide open spaces, and a proper South African braai all in one outing. Even though I’ve visited many nature reserves and parks across South Africa, there is something special about Rietvlei — the atmosphere is relaxed, family-friendly, and truly connected to nature. What makes this place stand out is the variety of animals you can see up close. On my visit, I saw buffalo, springbok, kudu, ostriches, and a mix of other antelope all feeding together in the open field. The environment feels safe and natural, with enough distance for the animals to roam freely while still allowing visitors to enjoy incredible views. It’s a great place for children to learn about wildlife outside of a typical zoo setting.The braai and picnic areas are a major highlight. Clean, spacious, and surrounded by the peaceful farm landscape — it’s the perfect place for families to spend the day. You can bring your own food, relax under the shade, and enjoy the sound of birds and the calmness of nature. It truly feels like a small escape from the busy city life of Johannesburg. There are also playgrounds and open grassy spaces, so kids can run around freely while adults unwind. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Everything is organized, from the entrance to the braai spots, and you can tell they take pride in keeping the area neat and well-maintained. The walking and cycling trails are beautifully laid out, and the farm atmosphere is peaceful and refreshing. There’s something wholesome and nostalgic about this place — it feels like the kind of spot many of us grew up visiting. Another great thing is how accessible it is. Located in Johannesburg South, it’s an easy drive from most parts of the city, and parking is plentiful. It’s a wonderful option for a weekend outing, school trip, birthday braai, or even just a quiet day outdoors.

The hiking trails are really nice... You literally feel like you are in a different environment or country even. This is a place for families of all ages. The atmosphere is welcoming and there are different activities for everyone ... Absolutely love this place!

Always a pleasure to hike in the morning. So far that's my favourite, I hate terrains , op n af, almost 8km today. It was drizzling nicely so and protected by the trees.

It’s good. Clean and safe. Was there for a team building event and I had fun. The toilets are clean and so is the area. There’s plenty of parking but there’s no covered parking.

Really enjoyed my visit to Rietvlei Zoo Farm! The place is clean, the animals look well taken care of, and the staff are friendly. There are also some extra activities you can do for an additional cost, which makes the trip even more fun if you’re looking for a bit more to do. Great spot for families or anyone looking to spend a relaxing day outdoors!

Wow that place is wonderful. Nice clean lot of parking. Free. And security is top.friendly staff. I recommend u guys go visit there
