I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Phillip Van Aswagen at Ballito Veterinary Clinic. He is a true gentleman and an exceptional young veterinarian who genuinely cares about his patients and their owners. From the moment we arrived, he made us feel comfortable and welcome. He took the time to thoroughly explain my puppy’s condition in a way that was easy to understand, patiently answered every question, and gave honest, practical advice. What really stood out was his integrity — there were no unnecessary tests or costs, just what was truly needed for my puppy’s health. He handled my puppy with such patience and kindness, which instantly put both of us at ease. His fees are very reasonable, and he is incredibly accommodating and professional. If you’re looking for a vet who is friendly, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and truly dedicated to animals, I highly recommend him. An outstanding experience from start to finish!

They just lost a potential new customer. Had an appointment for 09h50 today. Arrived early at 09h40. Did the check-in and was told to wait. Pets and their owners are coming and going, even ones with appointments scheduled after mine. At 10h20 I went and questioned the front desk, only to say vet is busy. 10h30 I finally bailed after another person went in front of me. Only goes to show that any business is as only good as the front desk. I personally think they forgot about me but bottom line is I will not be back. New to the Ballito area so will find another vet I am sure Update: 11 March 2026 15h10. The practice owner/vet phoned and apologized which is more than most businesses would do. They will refine their front desk processes.

Thank you so much to Dr Philip and the entire Ballito Vet hospital team for treating my girl Skyler when no one else would. After visiting multiple vets in Chatsworth, none could figure out what was wrong with her, and some refused to help simply because she is a Pitbull and was showing signs of aggression due to being very sick. I was especially disappointed after going to the well-known Westville vet hospital where the doctor was too scared to treat her and didn’t give her the care she needed and refused to admit her although it was an emergency Ballito Vet was completely different. Within 15 minutes or so , they recognised the signs and knew exactly what was wrong. Even though she was abit aggressive because of the pain she was in, they handled her with such professionalism, patience, and care. She was taken straight to emergency, and everything went smoothly. The very next day, we received a call to say we could fetch her. When we saw her, she was still in pain, but she had her spark back she was herself again. That moment meant everything to us. I am beyond grateful to Ballito Vet Hospital for saving my girl and treating her with compassion and dignity. I will continue to travel the distance to bring her here because she deserves the best care possible. It truly shows that this team love animals and care deeply about what they do. Thank you once again for saving my girl. I will always recommend Ballito Vet Hospital

In December 2021 I received a bill from the Ballito Vet Hospital for services rendered. Due to my personal experience at the time, and because I felt that certain aspects of the treatment and communication were not handled to the standard I expected, I made the decision not to settle the outstanding amount. My reasons were based on my own experience and concerns, which I outline below. 1. Treatment of my Great Dane I took my Great Dane to be examined for a swelling in her ear. After consultation with Dr. Stevens, I agreed to the recommended procedure. When I collected her, I was concerned to see that she was struggling to walk and appeared to be in significant discomfort. Initially, I assumed it was post-operative pain and the effects of anaesthetic. However, by the following day her condition had worsened. I returned to the vet seeking clarity. At first, I was told that nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. Later, I was informed that she had fallen off the examination table and reacted defensively when staff attempted to handle her. In my personal experience with her, she had never shown signs of aggression, and I believe her response could have been related to pain and confusion following sedation. As I was still concerned for her wellbeing, I took her to a sports vet in Ballito for further treatment. They provided excellent care and assisted in getting her mobility back, but at a considerable cost to me. 2. Emergency C-Section on another dog On a separate occasion, I took another one of my dogs in for an emergency C-section late at night. A few hours into the procedure, I received a call asking whether I wanted her spayed. I said "definitely not." I found it unusual that this question was asked mid-procedure, but I trusted that everything was being handled appropriately. Months later, she came into season but did not fall pregnant. This happened twice. I decided to have her spayed at the new veterinary practice I had moved to. Before the operation, I asked them to check whether there was a medical reason she had been unable to conceive. Their findings suggested that during the original C-section, part of the uterine horn had been inadvertently stitched in a way that would have prevented pregnancy. As a result, I unfortunately had to retire her as a breeding dog. 3. Billing dispute and lack of communication After these two experiences, I communicated my concerns directly to the Ballito Vet Hospital and explained why I felt unable to pay the outstanding account. Despite this, I did not receive any reduced bill, payment arrangement, follow-up communication, or any legal notice informing me of further action. I only recently discovered — nearly four years later — that a judgment had been placed against my name. I did not receive a statement, email, letter, or legal notice advising me that this would happen. 4. My intention in sharing this I want to be clear that I am sharing my personal experience as a client, and the impact these events had on my animals, my finances, and my credit record. My intention is not to damage anyone’s reputation, but rather to explain why I chose not to settle the account and why I feel the process was not handled transparently. Since then, I have heard similar concerns from other pet owners, which has reinforced my own feelings. As a pet owner, it is important to me that others are aware of my experience so that they can make informed choices about the care of their animals.

We were truly glad we got to take our dog to the Balito vet. The experience was amazing. We were well informed about our sick baby. Everything was explained to us in details and we were even given examples of what could cause the illness. Within 30min our baby felt better, he had stopped spewing and his diarrhea had stopped. When we reached home he drank lost of water and wanted food. We saw the vet the next day and he was all happy and healthy. First time experiencing a vet that actually explained everything to me and assured me. Great service, super amazing friendly staff. Charlotte Mooldey. Patient was Buster Moodley
