⭐ Johannesburg Zoo – Honest Review The Johannesburg Zoo is always such a lovely space to walk through, and today was no different. The animal enclosures are well‑kept, the habitats look clean and cared for, and the overall cleanliness of the grounds really stood out. One disappointing moment was having to ask some visitors to stop writing on the bamboo near the tiger enclosure. They shrugged it off because "everyone else was doing it," which really takes away from the experience and the respect the animals deserve. It would be great to see more visible signage or staff presence to discourage this kind of behaviour. There’s a nice restaurant near the main entrance with a good selection of food and drinks — a great spot to take a break. Some of the kiddies’ rides, however, are looking a bit weathered and could use a fresh coat of paint and some new murals to bring them back to life. The outdoor tables, chairs, and umbrellas are also sun‑aged; it would be fantastic to see brands like Ola sponsor some fresh outdoor furniture to uplift the space. One of the hidden gems of the zoo is the beautiful bandstand. It would be amazing to see local Johannesburg bands performing there on Sundays — pair that with a discounted entrance fee and you’d have a vibrant, well‑supported community day out. A final suggestion: the zoo could take inspiration from the Australian Zoo’s social media strategy. Dedicated animal accounts, behind‑the‑scenes updates, and regular content would go a long way in building engagement and excitement. Overall, the zoo remains a wonderful outing with so much potential to become even more special this year.

The Zoo Trot was well organized and attended. The website indicated start time at 07h00 but it was actually 07h30. It's a lovely walk through all the enclosures so you can see the animals who are well looked after. It was a super surprise to receive a medal at the end of the walk. Great for families and understandably no dogs allowed. The Christmas lights were up so must have looked spectacular in the evening There is an entrance and parking fee.

It was the first time we visited the zoo in years. We were pleasantly surprised. It was much better than what we've experienced previously when we were there. The undercover parking is great and even though we were there over a weekend the wait at the entry gate was less than 5min. Clean enclosures and the zoo is clean in general. There was no litter and the bathrooms were clean. We ended up spending more time there than we anticipated. Many of the enclosures have been upgraded and the animals seem to be well looked after. Will definitely visit again.

The zoo is huge, sprawling over a large area, making for a pleasant day of walking. For those who need assistance navigating the large area, golf carts are available for rent.a well-established and popular attraction in the leafy northern suburbs of the city, offers a sprawling and generally enjoyable escape into the animal kingdom. It's a fantastic spot for a family outing, a casual stroll, or an exciting discovery for all ages.

My visit to Johannesburg Zoo was simply excellent! Even on a day when hail fell, the trip became even more memorable. The zoo offers an amazing experience, with well-cared-for animals and spaces that allow you to enjoy every detail of nature. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable outing, even in unstable weather.

Still a very good Zoo. A few animals missing from my last visit about 18 years ago. Slightly more untidier than i remember. Hoever it was good to be there again, to see the whole zoo you will need the whole day.

Use to enjoy going here as a child. I decided to visit the zoo again after 16 years, and was disappointed that soo much has changed. There's still a lot of animals to see and if you have children, they will really enjoy it. In comparison to 16 years ago, the zoo has lost that certain spark it had, hopefully they bring more animals back, like more gorillas, chimps etc. and the enclosure that use to house the polar bears is now just wasted empty space that has deteriorated really badly, they should renovate it and put something new in that enclosure, like african penguins or something exciting that the zoo currently does not have. Also, the zoo is really big and there's a lot of ground to cover, soo I highly recommend that you rent a golf cart, especially if you have children and elderly with you. Also carry a back pack or a tote bag with you (maybe even 2 or 3 if you have a big group), it will come in handy to carry all of your snacks. There are also plenty of food stalls and places to buy beverages, snacks and ice cream within the zoo.
