Lucky Star
Lucky Star, located in Cape Town, is a well-established purveyor of canned fish products. Their selection includes a range of sardine varieties, and they are known for offering unique flavor profiles, like smoked sardines. A focus on reliable sourcing appears to be a priority, although consistency in product presentation can sometimes be a challenge.
The store's reputation is complex; while some appreciate the availability of distinctive items, customer interaction appears to occasionally be less than ideal. They offer convenient pantry staples and are a long-standing brand for many South African households. Maintaining product quality is an ongoing focus.

5/10/2023 I love fishy stuff!!! Always keep a tin of Lucky Star sardines in tomato sauce in pantry - sometimes for lunch I'll blitzed the sardines in tomato sauce with boiling water, add spices and that's my liquid lunch. Deelish! When I saw the tinned Smoked Sardines, I bought it. A while back on TV program Chopped, they had to use Smoked Peanutbutter and tinned sardines. Well, fat chance of getting smoked peanutbutter in SA - but when I saw the smoked sardines, kaching!!!!!! I've just now baked 6 muffins - crunchy peanutbutter, smoked sardines and Habanero sauce. Delicious!!!!!!! Here's the recipe: PEANUTBUTTER AND SMOKED SARDINE MUFFINS Makes 6 big muffins 1 cup self-rising flour 1 large egg 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup vegetable oil 120 g Lucky Star smoked flavored sardines in can, drained, chopped 1 heaped tablespoon crunchy peanutbutter salt, pepper 1 tablespoon Banditos Habanero sauce (optional) Preheat oven to 200 oC. (See Sunbeam Airfryer temperature below.) Mix together the egg, milk, oil, salt, pepper, sardines, Habanero sauce and peanutbutter. Add the flour, mix and spoon into greased 6 muffin pan. Bake for 20 minutes (or till test skewer comes out clean.) Let cool in pan for 10 minutes. SUNBEAM AIRFRYER – low tray, 220 oC – 25 minutes. The marketing guy is rude and thinks we only there for free stuff. Called head office to complain and they said they cannot take messages. Really!!
I have been buing Lycky Star sardines drained with vegetable oil added for some time. Recently I purchased the same product and what a disappointment. The presentation of the sardines was not appealing at all. The vegetable oil was very dark and the sardines had severe skin damage. The quality of the product appeared to be vert suspect. Due to this observation I opted to discard the product. In the past I never had any complaints re the product.
Please note I bought 2 tins of lucky Star Pilchards on the 7th of June 2022 at Checkers Hyperama. I chopped it up and placed it on my toast , I started eating and found hard pieces in the Pilchards only to discover my gum bleeding and my crown loose and on closer inspection I found pieces of glass in the sauce and in the fish. I definitely need management to call me. Thanking you Peter Petzer
I have been eating the Lucky Star Sardines for years; however, I would really to raise a concern. The scales are not properly removed from the fish. Clearly, this indicate quality concerns.
We just opened a can of fish, which is best used before 2022, but it is rotten. Please refer to the photos attached
ISO 14000 compliant environment control system?! I think NOT! Come and see and smell the Hout Bay harbour for yoursleves. It is criminal what Oceana is allowing! Start a petitionBrowseSearch Explore Solvej Vorster Petitioning Oceana Group - Operations Director Mike Copeland and 6 others Please Clean up your Factory, Oceana Group! Sally Shuttleworth Hout Bay, South Africa The Oceana factory in Hout Bay is depositing its waste into our bay, and we have had no communication from Oceana to give us confidence that this "fish blood water" is not harmful to the environment. Currently, the fish fumes can be smelled to the top of Hout Bay on a daily basis. This affects residents and tourism as the smell is often stifling and the brown waste is smelly and makes the harbour appear unclean - certainly unswimmable. We feel that as residents of Hout Bay, we need to get Oceana Group and the factory to acknowledge that this is not an industrial area, that the environment is important, that the harbour is not only a working harbour, but one which needs to be respected and protected by all who gainfully work and live here. We need the government to take charge and develop a better plan for the marina, with an effective management team that is not politically driven, but who looks to the future of the bay and works towards a sustainable working environment that doesn't cause harm to either the environment, the residents living here or the tourist trade that many people here rely on.
